Comfort food for cooler days
Because when the weather dips, your cravings change too.
Craving something indulgent?

More of a slow, cosy bite?
18 Grams Cafe has a hearty croissant set that feels a little bit fancy but still comforting!
Or if you want something satisfying…
Tomoko Sushi Bar covers all bases. Sushi, rice bowls, and ramen depending on your mood.
Easy evenings, sorted
Some nights don’t need big plans… just the right drink.
The Amaretto Sour might have just met its hazelnut-flavoured match. Find your next go-to at Dan Murphy's. Whether you’re sticking to a classic or trying something new for the night.
You can drink one on a hot summer day and no one will bat an eyelid, but it’ll work in the depths of winter, too. The nutty sweetness (and that Baci Hazelnut Truffle garnish) makes it a great post-dinner nightcap, but we can also see this cocktail and a plate of salty cheeses pairing up in the afternoon. Choose your own adventure.
Ingredients:
40mL Frangelico
20mL bourbon
5mL lemon juice
15mL fresh orange juice
10mL sugar syrup
1 egg white
Glass: rocks
Garnish: Garnish: Baci Hazelnut Truffle
Method:
Add all ingredients to a cocktail shaker and dry shake, without ice, to incorporate all ingredients and emulsify the egg white
Add ice to the tin and shake until the outside of the tin is frosty
Strain into a glass and fill with fresh ice
Finish with the Baci chocolate placed on the side of the glass
It’s not a full reset… but it kinda feels like one.
Pop in, tick a few things off your list, and grab something warm, maybe something for later. And suddenly the week feels a whole lot better!

Kiss All The Time Paloma cocktail recipe
New Harry Styles calls for a new signature drink – freshly squeezed for your first listen.
The time has come, friends. After a three-year hiatus, marathon runner, style icon and professional gap-year enthusiast Harry Styles has returned with his latest studio album, Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally (or KATTDO for those already deep in the group chat). And if the first single, Aperture, is anything to go by, this is the kind of album best enjoyed with your favourite people, comfy shoes and something fruity in your glass.
Naturally, the team at Dan Murphy’s started asking an important question: WWHD? (That’s What Would Harry Drink?.) A Rolling Stone interview reveals he’s partial to tequila over ice, and his well-known love for watermelon didn’t go unnoticed either. From there, the idea practically mixed itself.
Enter the Kiss All The Time Paloma — fruity, zesty and electric pink. The drink gives new life to a Watermelon Vodka Cruiser, split between friends and topped up with blanco tequila, grapefruit juice, lime and a pinch of salt.
It’s quick to make, meaning less time mixing and more time getting to the important part: the listening party. Served in a highball glass, it’s also perfect for dancing along without worrying about spills as the album plays through.
Perfect the recipe now, and keep it ready for the next time Harry takes the stage. As the man himself once told Capital FM: “Come ready to dance.”
Ingredients
30mL blanco tequila
30mL pink grapefruit juice
15mL lime juice
75mL Watermelon Vodka Cruiser
Pinch of salt
Garnish: frozen watermelon wedge
Glass: highball
Method
Add all ingredients to your glass
Give it a gentle stir, and then fill the glass with cubed ice
Garnish with a frozen watermelon wedge (see tips below)
Dan’s Top Tips!
This cocktail keeps things refreshingly simple — which might just be its greatest strength (aside from being ridiculously delicious). When it comes to the juices, fresh is always the way to go. If pink grapefruit isn’t easy to find, bottled juice will still do the trick and keep the drink just as vibrant.
A little prep goes a long way for the finishing touch: the frozen watermelon garnish. Start by removing the rind and slicing the watermelon into wedges. Add a small slit in each piece so it can sit neatly on the rim of the glass — making that cut before freezing is important, as trying to do it later can cause the fruit to crack. Place the wedges in a single layer in the freezer so they don’t stick together. After about three hours, they’ll be ready to deliver that perfect chilled garnish.
The final tip? Put on Harry’s new album and share the cocktail with friends. For the full vibe, lean into some Berlin-inspired snacks alongside it — think large, soft pretzels for the table. Yoghurt dip optional, good company essential.

Hot Pink Punch cocktail recipe
When warm weather hits, an ice-cold jug of this gin and watermelon mix is exactly what we want to drink.
Do sunny summer afternoons send you into daydreams of juicy watermelon slices and shady spots to eat them in? They do for us, and we reckon this group-friendly cocktail goes one better, although we’ll take a few slices of that watermelon, too.
Honestly, this Hot Pink Punch pretty much hits all of those warm-weather drinking buttons. There’s the watermelon, of course, which brings a cooling, fruity sweetness, ramped up by a little sugar syrup. But it’s all in perfect balance, tempered by the bitter citrus notes of Campari and the tang of lemon juice, while gin adds herbal depth and a spicy salt rim brings a fiery note upfront. Much like our enduring Legally Blonde hero Elle Woods, there’s genuine complexity here beyond the hot pink exterior.
Our Hot Pink Punch also shines in the sunny seasons because it’s designed to be shareable – a perfect centrepiece for afternoon barbecues or catch-ups. Friends will be drawn in by the eye-popping colour, but they’ll stay for the melony freshness. This recipe is designed to serve six, so we’d be grabbing that punchbowl you’re always saving for a special occasion and letting everyone ladle themselves a spice-rimmed cup. Otherwise, a jug and rocks glasses is great, too.
Ingredients: GARNISH
½ lemon
2 tbsp salt flakes
½ tsp mild red pepper flakes
Ingredients: COCKTAIL
1.5kg seedless watermelon, rind removed, cut into large cubes (about 3.5 cups)
250mL gin
125mL fresh lemon juice
45mL Campari
60mL sugar syrup
Glass: punch bowl or jug and rocks glasses
Method:
For the garnish, combine the pepper and salt flakes on a plate. Run the lemon around the rim of 6 glasses, dip them in the salt mix, and place the glasses in the freezer to chill
In a blender, blitz the watermelon until it’s smooth, then pass it through a fine sieve, pressing on the solids to get as much juice as you can – it should yield about 540mL
In a large jug filled with ice, add the watermelon juice and remaining ingredients, and stir to combine well
Serve the drink into your prepared, chilled glasses filled with fresh ice
Punches are party-perfect drinks because they come in big batches, meaning no one has to man the cocktail station all night. Our recipe for the Hot Pink Punch makes six serves but, if you’re planning on inviting the whole crew, feel free to scale it up to suit. You might need to blend the watermelon in batches but, if you’ve got a punch bowl big enough or a couple of jugs to spare, there’s no reason this recipe couldn’t make 12 or 18 serves just by doubling or tripling all the quantities.
The only other thing to keep in mind here is the spicy rim. We’re calling for a mix of salt and mild red pepper flakes to bring just a hint of heat, but we’ll leave the final Scoville count to you. Want it spicier? Go with a jar of chilli flakes instead of mild red pepper. You can also use Tajin, which is a Mexican blend of lime, chilli and salt.

The hero of your Australia Day feast. Juicy, flavour-packed and perfect for the grill — Woolies has the cut, the sides and everything in between.
Ingredients
Marinade
20ml Kikkoman teriyaki sauce
3-4 large potatoes
2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced
2 sprigs rosemary leaves
2 tbs olive oil
1.20kg beef rib-eye steaks, on the bone (4 x 300g steaks)
200ml honey
250g asparagus spears
1 pkt cherry tomatoes (to garnish)
1/2 lime, grilled in pan (to garnish)
Soy butter
80ml kikkoman soy sauce (regular, gluten free or less salt or tamari variants are fine)
200g unsalted butter, softened
1 clove garlic, roughly chopped
30g pickled ginger, chopped
1/2 bunch chives, chopped
Directions
Step 1
For soy butter, process butter, soy sauce, garlic, ginger and chives in a food processor until combined. Lay a 30cm square piece of plastic wrap on a bench. Spoon butter along 1 side, leaving a 2cm border. Roll into a log, twist ends to seal, then chill for 1-2 hours until firm.
Step 2
Preheat oven to 180 degrees.
Step 3
Slice potatoes lengthways and cut the desired thickness leave skin on potatoes for a rustic appearance. Place a small pot of water on to boil and when ready place the chips in and boil for one minute. Drain quickly and scatter the chips on a tray and drizzle with some oil and season with some sea salt. Place in the oven and cook chips for 35 mins or until golden crunchy.
Step 4
Meanwhile, combine garlic, rosemary leaves and olive oil, salt and pepper and add steak in a bowl and turn to coat well. Marinate for 30 minutes at room temperature.
Step 5
Toss asparagus in teriyaki sauce and honey and place on a baking tray. Place in the oven for 5 mins.
Step 6
Heat an oiled chargrill pan on medium-high heat. When hot, cook steaks for 4-5 minutes each side for medium-rare, or until done to your liking. Place on a plate, loosely cover with foil and leave aside to rest in a warm place until needed.
Step 7
Divide steaks across four plates, serve steak with a slice of soy butter on top of the steak to allow to melt and serve chips and sticky asparagus, garnish with cherry tomatoes and grilled lime.
Australia Day shouldn’t feel like a chore — and with Woolworths at Thornleigh Marketplace, it doesn’t have to. Stock up on the essentials, try something new and head into the long weekend feeling chilled, prepped and ready to celebrate.
Wine 101: What temperature should my wine be?
From ice cold to room temp, learn how to improve your wine experience by serving it the right way.
The easiest way to dull the shine of a perfectly good bottle of wine is to serve it at the wrong temperature. I have a very expensive bottle of Bordeaux (and a rightfully grumpy restaurant customer) to thank for this lesson, but that’s a story for another day.
Getting your wine to the perfect temperature is worth its weight in gold. Too warm, and you’ll suck all the energy and vibrancy right out of it. Too cold, and you’ll dampen its aromatic charm and complexity. But every wine’s different, so knowing where to aim can be tricky.
Lucky for you, we’ve broken it down into six easy categories, from sparkling wine to big, bold reds and everything in between. There’s even a handy fridge guide to save you from dunking a thermometer into your glass before serving!
Sparkling: 3-6ºC
The best place to start is always sparkling. This one’s the easiest to get right. Sparkling wines, such as non-vintage Champagne, prosecco, Cava and the like, should almost exclusively be served ice cold, or 3 to 6ºC if we want to be specific. All those vibrant citrus flavours are at their best and freshest at ultra-low temperatures. The exception here is vintage Champagne, or any aged sparkling, as these are best served a little warmer to accentuate those toasty brioche flavours. Treat them like a lighter white, as you’ll see below.
Fridge guide: chill for at least two hours before serving.
Lighter whites: 7-10ºC
Just like sparkling, light and bright whites are best enjoyed at the colder end of the spectrum. The sweet spot is between 7ºC and 10ºC to lock in all those gorgeous fresh fruit flavours we love in wines like Eden Valley riesling or a nice Loire Valley sauvignon blanc. The lighter the wine, the cooler the temperature and vice versa.
Fridge guide: chill for a little over an hour.
Rosé: 7-14ºC
Here’s where things start to feel almost back to front. Pink wines cover a spectrum of flavours and styles as broad as white. You’ve got your sweet, unctuous rosés at one end and your crisp, dry Provence-style pinks at the other. In either case, refreshment is essential for rosé, so balancing sweetness and dryness should be the aim. The sweeter the rosé, the cooler you want to go. This will keep it from feeling flabby or overly syrupy. For dry rosé, temperatures approaching those of richer white wines will unlock all those fruity notes and round out the acidity.
Fridge guide: chill a sweeter rosé for a little over an hour before serving; take a dry rosé out 30 minutes before serving.
Richer whites: 10-14ºC
The easiest way to ruin a very nice bottle of Hunter Valley semillon or a lovely oaked chardonnay is to serve it too cold. Richer white wines are famous for their complexity and multi-layered flavours and aromas – things that seemingly go missing entirely at colder temperatures. Another tip with wines of this style is to skip the ice bucket. Plonk your bottle on the table to fully experience its unfurling flavours as it rises to temperature.
Fridge guide: take it out 30 minutes before serving.
Lighter reds: 12-15ºC
Red wines such as pinot noir, sangiovese or a nice rustic grenache can be at their best with a slight chill on them. These light and bright varieties are emboldened by their crisp acidity and fruit-driven nuance, which is only elevated when served slightly cool. Serve them too cold, however, and you risk stifling all their deep, earthy flavours. Give them half an hour in the fridge before serving, and a slight pause in the glass prior to your first sip.
Fridge guide: chill for 30 minutes before serving.
Richer reds: 15-18ºC
The advice to serve big and bold reds at room temperature is almost single-handedly responsible for the diminishing return on investment into varieties like shiraz and cabernet sauvignon. Room temperature, you see, isn’t exactly a set number. While it might represent the ideal serving temperature in somewhere like Bordeaux, Australia’s average room temperature typically sits above 20ºC – way too warm for wine. A short stint in the fridge will lock in freshness, and restore balance and finesse to your full-bodied reds.

Ghoulish garnishes at the ready – these are the best drinks to mix up on October 31.
Ghoulish garnishes at the ready – these are the best drinks to mix up on October 31.
Spooky szn is upon us. Whether you’re hosting an all-out Halloween party on October 31 or planning to spend the night on the couch – perhaps with a horror movie marathon for the occasion – we think an on-theme cocktail is an excellent idea.
Regardless of how you’re spending the scariest night of the year, consider playing bartender with one of these themed cocktails. It might be their colour or name that fits, or they might be prime contenders for scary garnishes. Whatever the case, these Halloween cocktails are all downright delicious.
1. Diablo Rojo
Made for Halloween, the Diablo Rojo, or Red Devil, is a tasty riff on the Bloody Mary, but with a few tweaks. For starters, instead of tomato juice, it uses bullhorn pepper puree (but this is super easy to make, and you can sub in red capsicum if you can’t find the right peppers). Also made with mezcal, agave syrup, lemon juice, Tabasco, smoked paprika and coriander, this is a scarily good balance of smoky, spicy and sweet. You can choose to leave out the coriander and spice for a ‘treat’ rather than a ‘trick’, perhaps, but either way, it’s absolutely bang-on for your Halloween party.
2. Devil’s Horn
The secret to this devilish cocktail is a quality spiced rum with flavours of vanilla, nutmeg, cinnamon and cloves. If rum isn’t your jam, you can always replace it with gin or tequila, which will take it into Lucifer’s Margarita territory. We love swapping out muddled chilli for Tabasco, given most people have a bottle on the go, but it’s also easier to control the spice levels this way. Fresh lime juice, cranberry juice, sweet honey syrup and fresh raspberries all balance nicely with the rum and spice. Top it off with chilli devil horns as garnish and you’ve got one hell of a Halloween-ready beverage.
3. Negroni Sour
It’s true that the classic Negroni makes an excellent Halloween cocktail, with its deep red hue and bittersweet flavours. But we’re going for its perkier sibling, the Negroni Sour, which is frothy and a vibrant red. This cocktail takes the best bits of a Negroni – gin, sweet vermouth and Campari – and turns it into a Sour by adding fresh orange juice, which brings the sweetness, and egg white for that creamy texture. It’s an excellent choice for anyone still on the fence about bitter cocktails, and you can dress it up on October 31 with a dash or two of bitters on top for dramatic effect.
4. Bloody Mary
By far one of the best-known cocktails, and especially popular at brunches the world over, the Bloody Mary is a crowd favourite. The simple combo of tomato juice, Worcestershire Sauce, Tabasco Sauce and vodka just works – it’s balanced, it’s moreish and, in our opinion, it’s so much more than a drink to be enjoyed with a big, late breakfast. Consider serving Bloody Marys at your Halloween party and get creative with the garnishes. Pick up mini mozzarella balls and pitted black olives at your local deli, cut a hole in each ball, add a slice of olive, and you’ve got a spooky garnish that doubles as a snack.
5. Side Eye
Ever get the feeling someone is watching you? Us too, especially when this cocktail is on the menu. Named for its googly lychee eyes, the Side Eye is a fun mix of pineapple juice, passionfruit, vodka and orange curacao with a port float that gives the drink an enchanting marble effect. This cocktail is as delicious as it is spooky: we’re talking tropical, fruity and surprisingly refreshing. And in terms of fun garnishes, it doesn’t get much spookier than grabbing a couple of lychees stuffed with blackberries (or blueberries) and some mint sprigs to give this cocktail a ghoulish touch. Boo!
6. Lao Gan Martini
We always knew chilli oil was a versatile condiment, but in a cocktail? That’s hot. Introducing the Lao Gan Martini: a bold twist on the Classic Martini, infused with the spicy and umami-rich Lao Gan Ma chilli oil. This unexpected ingredient adds depth and complexity, and is balanced here with zesty yuzu liqueur, vodka and honey to smooth out any sharp edges. Perfect for adventurous drinkers and chilli lovers alike, we’ve replaced the traditional soft-serve with a zingy lemon sorbet. Top it with blobs of blood-red Lao Gan Ma, and you’ve got a bloody frightfully good cocktail to serve at your Halloween party.
7. Zombie
Why not get a little tropical at your Halloween house party? This OG tiki cocktail features a combo of light and dark rums mixed with lime juice, passionfruit syrup, falernum and bitters. It’s pretty punchy flavour-wise, so don’t be afraid to go full Frankenstein and experiment with your ratios until the taste is just right. The only thing more frightening than the name of this cocktail is the sheer amount of garnishes it can handle – you can top it with mint, pineapple, cherries, limes, a pineapple leaf and a cocktail umbrella. Or throw in whatever else you have on hand and see just how OTT you can go.
8. Death Flip
It might have a scary name, but it gets even more hair-raising when you read the ingredients, including Chartreuse, Jägermeister and egg. Sure, it’s not for the faint-hearted, but live large and prepare to blow the minds (and tastebuds) of your guests. Each ingredient brings its own magic: the Jägermeister adds an aniseed punch, while yellow Chartreuse infuses a herbal depth, and tequila brings its signature peppery notes. Then the vanilla-infused sugar syrup and grated nutmeg enhance the drink with sweetness and spice. That grated nutmeg doesn’t look very spooky (it’s giving Eggnog rather than a frightening Halloween concoction) so you might like to use a pumpkin-shaped stencil or add a few drops of red food dye for extra shock value.
9. Who Shot Tom Collins
Take a classic Tom Collins, add a dash of ‘blood’ and you’ve got a very on-theme cocktail. It could even be the drink of choice for your next murder mystery night. We can’t take credit for this modern interpretation of the original Tom Collins – it was actually the clever cookies at Aussie distillery Four Pillars Gin. The purple, blood-like colour that floats on top is their much-loved Bloody Shiraz Gin, which looks the part and also brings peppery spice, raspberry and a sweetness to the drink. The trick to nailing the float is slowly pouring it over the back of a teaspoon as the final touch before serving. We don’t know who shot Tom Collins, but we do know this drink is easy to make and chillingly delicious.
10. Corpse Reviver No.2
Ready to raise the dead? Here’s the cocktail to help you do it. The Corpse Reviver No.2 is a tasty sipper that’s balanced and refreshing. Made with London dry gin, white vermouth, triple sec and absinthe, it can be adjusted in multiple ways depending on what your tastebuds are craving. You can swap out the gin for vodka, try a hit of lime juice instead of lemon, or use different liqueurs like the Italian Cocchi Americano in place of triple sec. The name is spooky, sure, but if you want a cocktail that’s going to fit in among the spider webs hanging over the light shades and plastic skeleton in your front yard, we suggest dropping a fake plastic spider into your coupe glass.
11. Red Hook
The Red Hook may be a cross between the Manhattan and Brooklyn cocktails, and named after the Red Hook area of NYC, but we think it also makes a pretty scarily named choice for Halloween. Rye whiskey gives this cocktail a touch of spice, which is mellowed out by sweet vermouth and cherry liqueur. It’s a classic late-night pick, perhaps best enjoyed sipped in front of a scary movie at home with friends.
12. Rusty Nail
Rusty nails can be pretty scary – tetanus shots and all. But here, we have a much more enjoyable Rusty Nail, especially if you’re a fan of whisky and whisky liqueurs. In this simple two-ingredient cocktail, all you need to do is combine 45mL of Scotch with 15mL of whisky liqueur (we love Drambuie) in a tumbler with ice, and give it a good stir to combine and chill down. This cocktail delivers all the best notes from the Scotch whisky, with a hint of sweetness from the liqueur. This is a perfect cocktail for sipping and savouring, best enjoyed while watching the processions of trick-or-treaters pass by.
Chocolate Strawberry Ghosts And Monsters Recipe
Get spooky in the kitchen with this fun and festive Chocolate Strawberry Ghosts and Monsters recipe! Fresh strawberries are dipped in white and dark chocolate, then decorated with candy eyes, icing, and creative flair to resemble ghosts, mummies, and monsters. Perfect for Halloween parties or a playful treat, these bite-sized delights are as delicious as they are hauntingly adorable.
Ingredients
1 punnet strawberries
200g dark chocolate
200g white chocolate
choc minis (for eyes)
Directions
Step 1
Line a baking tray with baking paper.
Step 2
Break chocolate into small pieces and place into separate microwave-safe bowls. Microwave the chocolate in 30-second bursts until just melted.
Step 3
Hold the stem of each strawberry and dip into either white chocolate (for mummies and ghosts) or dark chocolate (for monsters) and place on lined tray. For ghosts, dip heavily in white chocolate and drag slightly as it is placed on the lined tray to create a trail to represent a ghost.
Step 4
While the chocolate is still melted, carefully place two choc minis of the same colour on each chocolate covered strawberry to represent eyes.
Step 5
Place the strawberries in the fridge for five minutes, or until chocolate is set.
Step 6
Re-melt the remaining white and dark chocolate, and transfer each to a separate piping bag. To decorate mummies, pipe overlapping lines of white chocolate across the white chocolate-covered strawberries, avoiding the eye area. For the monsters, pipe zig zags of dark chocolate around the face area, and pipe a zig zag of white chocolate for teeth. Place back in the fridge for five minutes to set, or until ready to serve.

Favourite dark beers (that aren’t Guinness)
If beer enthusiasts have a hankering for a richer, darker style this season, Dan Murphy’s has them covered. Guinness is making a strong comeback, and this has already delved into this exciting trend, sharing experiences of perfectly poured pints of black gold. For those who resonate with this passion, the resurgence of Guinness appears to be just the beginning of a beautiful love affair with dark beers, especially with the cooler months approaching.
The presents six of Dan Murphy’s favourite dark beers, excluding Guinness, featuring options from crisp and toasty dark lagers to the richest stouts.
1. Tooheys Old Dark Ale
Beer is subject to the whims of fashion as much as clothes, music and hairstyles. Much like low-rise jeans, pop punk and mullets that are all coming back (for some trendsetters, all at the same time), old-school beers are cool again – and none more than Tooheys Old, a lighter style of dark ale that’s been around since way back in 1869.
We’re proud Tooheys Old fans here and it shouldn’t be hard to see why. It’s got history, sure, but it’s really all about the flavour, which has everything a dark beer should – hints of chocolate and coffee, a tiny touch of fruitiness and a little roastiness. A treat for anyone looking for a dark beer without the heaviness of stouts and porters.
2. Monteith’s Black Beer
Most of the dark beers we drink are ales, but they don’t have to be – lagers can get in on the dark fun, too. With its Black Beer, Monteith’s has gone for what’s called a schwarzbier in the beer game, which is essentially a German-style dark lager (it literally translates as ‘black beer’). Here, five roasty, toasty malts (those are malted grains, BTW) lend a healthy whack of dark beer flavour but, being a lager, Monteith’s Black is still light and crisp. If you’re after a delicate dose of smooth chocolate and coffee flavours, this is your guy.
3. Coopers Best Extra Stout
In a world of small-batch craft brews, Coopers seems to defy logic with flavoursome ales – and none more so than the Best Extra Stout. This is, frankly, one of the best value, best tasting stouts on the market (listen to us gush!) and a worthy constant in any winter dark-beer rotation.
Extra stouts are just normal stouts that have been beefed up a little, and that’s what you’ll find here – a rich, velvety dark beer that is packed with roasty chocolate flavours and rounded out by a decent bitterness. If you like the richer style of Guinness Extra Stout (as opposed to the super smooth Draught) then make the old switcheroo for this fella – you won’t regret it.
4. Boatrocker Stout
Melbourne craft brewery Boatrocker has been doing its thing since 2009, and it’s fair to say that, in that time, they’ve been responsible for some of the best beers Australia has seen. While plenty have been limited editions or adventurous styles, the humble Boatrocker Stout has made a case for simple quality.
Here, rich and toasty English malts do the big lifting, making for a silky smooth stout that is hearty enough without being overly-heavy. Plus, as a rare example of the stout tinnie, this Boatrocker brew is ticking every possible box for us (including for the mythical winter barbecue). A proper winner when the temperature drops outside.
5. Monsuta Okinawa Dark Premium Lager
If we’re talking beer, Japan is definitely a land of lagers. The lager love affair doesn’t exclude Japan from dark beers, though, with dark lagers like this one from Monsuta hitting all those crisp and light lager notes in perfect harmony with toasty dark beer flavours. With its Dark Premium Lager, the Okinawa brewery brings just a little richness, a dash of nuttiness and those slightly bitter, extra-crunchy hops that let you know you’re still in lager town. If you’re trying to hit the sweet spot between easy-going and flavour bomb, this is a bulls-eye.
6. White Rabbit Dark Ale
Aussie beer drinkers have long found their way to the dark side via White Rabbit Dark Ale and it’s easy to see why. This isn’t some palate-wrecking malt-explosion – instead, despite the black-brown colour, this is a gentle dark beer with a little fruitiness and a subtle whack of chocolate covered caramel, all rounded out by a gentle sweetness. Light and chocolatey as it is, this is a winner with a cheeky piece of milk chocolate on the side.
