dos and don’ts for healthy winter skin

Have you ever thought your skin seems different during winter? You’re right! Drier air and the drop in temperature weaken our skin’s protective barrier, leading to concerns such as dryness, flakiness, irritation, redness – even infection if we don’t resolve these issues.

But don’t worry – healthy winter skin is possible. What’s needed is to give your skin some extra care, adjust your skincare routine slightly during winter.

Dos:

  1. Moisturise: Use a rich, emollient moisturiser to lock in hydration and help support a protective skin barrier to defend against the elements.

  2. Hydrate: You may not feel as thirsty but keep drinking plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated from the inside out.

  3. Protect: Dress warmly using long-sleeves, scarves, gloves and hats as necessary to shield dry skin from winds and cold temperatures.

  4. Gentle cleansing: Opt for mild, hydrating cleansers that don’t strip away the skin's natural oils.

Don'ts:

  1. Ignore issues: Ask your Pharmacist if your skin has worsened, is overly sensitive or has become irritated.

  2. Over-exfoliate: Avoid harsh exfoliants that can further irritate dry, sensitive skin. A warm, wet flannel is often enough.

  3. Take long, hot showers: Hot water can strip the skin of its natural oils, exacerbating dryness. Stick to lukewarm showers and limit their duration.

  4. Skip sunscreen: Winter UV rays can still damage your skin. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher, whenever the UV index is 3 or higher.
